A deadly crash outside Whittier left one person dead and two others injured Monday afternoon after a sedan slammed into a local burger restaurant near Slauson Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard.
The crash happened around 2:25 p.m. at Michael’s Super Burgers in the 11500 block of East Slauson Avenue. The vehicle struck the restaurant, causing significant damage to the front portion of the building.
Paramedics pronounced one person dead at the scene. The person who died had not been publicly identified as of the latest reports.
Two other people were injured. One was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while another suffered minor injuries and did not require transportation, according to firefighters.
The crash drew emergency crews to the busy intersection as investigators worked to determine what led the sedan to leave the roadway and hit the restaurant. Authorities have not said what caused the driver to lose control, and it was not immediately clear whether drugs, alcohol or another factor played a role.
People near the restaurant described a chaotic scene in the moments after the crash. Witnesses reported hearing the vehicle before seeing the aftermath, while video from the area showed people moving quickly away from the restaurant.
A nearby worker also said people rushed over to help those who had been injured.
The identity of the person killed has not been released, and authorities have not provided additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision.
The investigation remains ongoing. The intersection was affected by the crash while police and other emergency personnel worked at the scene.
