A shooting at a Southwest Atlanta apartment complex left one man dead and two other people hospitalized Friday night, prompting a homicide investigation as authorities work to determine what happened.
Atlanta police were called to Gateway South Apartments at 2001 Sylvan Road SW around 9 p.m. after reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found a trail of blood and noticed a person who may have been a victim leaving the area.
As officers searched the surrounding neighborhood and gathered information, they learned that three people had arrived at a local hospital with apparent gunshot wounds.
The victims were two adult men and one woman. One of the men later died from his injuries, while the second man and the woman were reported to be alert, conscious and breathing, according to police.
Detectives from the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide and Aggravated Assault Unit responded to investigate the shooting and begin piecing together the events that led to the violence.
What Police Know About the Shooting

In March 2025, a separate double shooting at the same property left one man dead and another hospitalized. Investigators said at the time that the incident appeared to be connected to a suspected narcotics transaction.
That earlier case involved its own investigation, and authorities have not established a connection between it and Friday night’s shooting.
The property also came into the news in August 2026 during a search for two young girls, ages 4 and 11 months, who authorities said had been kidnapped by their babysitter.
According to the reported details of that case, law enforcement officers tracked the suspect’s cellphone signal to the apartment complex. Officers then heard a child crying inside a locked tow trailer and used bolt cutters to free the children, who were found unharmed.
The babysitter, identified as 42-year-old Lakesha Brown, was arrested on kidnapping and child cruelty charges.
Although these incidents occurred at the same address, they involved different circumstances. Investigators have not said that the earlier cases are connected to the latest shooting.

The immediate priority for detectives is to determine what led to the gunfire, identify everyone involved and establish whether anyone else may have witnessed the incident.
