Three students from Eisenhut Elementary School and a woman were hospitalized Thursday morning after a vehicle struck them near the Modesto campus, according to authorities and school district officials.
The crash happened at about 7:45 a.m. near the crosswalk at Janet Drive and Sheldon Drive as the children were making their way to school. The three students were taken by air to hospitals for medical treatment, while the woman was transported by ambulance.
Authorities have not released the conditions of the students or the woman.
The incident occurred during the morning school commute, prompting a police response around the Eisenhut Elementary campus. The school was not placed on lockdown, but families were asked to stay away from Sheldon Drive while officers worked at the scene.
The school district said additional support was made available to students and staff following the crash. Counselors and mental health support teams were brought to campus Thursday and are expected to remain available in the days ahead.
“Right now, our focus is entirely on supporting our students, staff, and families,” Superintendent Shannon Sanford said in a message to district families.
School officials also said police will maintain a greater presence around the campus during the next couple of weeks as traffic is monitored in the area.
The Modesto Police Department’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation. Investigators are also seeking any available video that could help establish what happened before and during the collision.
At this point, police have not released additional information about the vehicle involved or what led to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
