LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Two drivers were killed and a 7-year-old girl was taken to a hospital following a wrong-way collision on the 241 Toll Road in Orange County.
The crash happened around 10:35 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the southbound lanes of the toll road, just north of Lake Forest Drive.
Investigators said a Honda SUV was heading north in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a BMW traveling in the correct direction.
The Honda driver was identified as 57-year-old Norma Herrera of Irvine. The BMW was driven by 39-year-old Joseph Kyle Massey of Rancho Santa Margarita. Both drivers died following the collision.
A 7-year-old girl who was riding as a passenger in the BMW survived and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the extent of her injuries or provided an updated condition.
Investigators are still working to determine how the Honda ended up traveling against traffic before the crash. It also remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played any role.
No additional information about the events leading up to the collision has been released.
