Seven people were injured in a shooting in East Baltimore on Wednesday night, including a 3-year-old boy who was rushed to a hospital after being found wounded at the scene.
Baltimore police responded shortly after 9 p.m. near the 1400 block of East Fayette Street, around the Douglas Homes area. A patrol officer heard gunfire while in the neighborhood and soon encountered several people who had been shot.
The young boy was among those injured. The officer placed him in a police vehicle and drove him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. The other six victims were also taken for medical treatment.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the victims were believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators have not released the ages of the other victims or said whether they were connected to one another.
The shooting happened near the intersection of East Fayette Street and North Caroline Street, a short distance from Johns Hopkins Hospital. Police activity in the area led to road closures as investigators worked to secure the scene and collect evidence.
Investigators have not announced any arrests and have not identified a suspect or suspects. Police are also working to determine what led to the gunfire and whether the victims were targeted.
Officials expressed particular concern over the fact that a young child was among those injured.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott urged residents who may have information about the shooting to come forward. He said there was no justification for an act of violence that left a 3-year-old child among the victims.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, heard information about what happened or may have other details that could help investigators to contact authorities.
Tips can be reported to 911 or anonymously through Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine who fired the shots and what led to the incident.
