Drivers passing through Bethel Park have an unusual obstacle to watch for these days: a wild turkey that appears to have made a busy roadside intersection his favorite place to hang out.

Known locally as Tom, the turkey has become a familiar sight around the Logan Road and Library Road area, where motorists have reportedly had to slow down or stop while he takes his time crossing the road.

For people who work nearby, Tom’s routine has become hard to miss.

“He uses the crosswalk sometimes,” Eddie Shipman, a chef at Fresh Fork Cafe, said. He described the turkey as an almost constant presence who can remain near the roadway for hours watching traffic.

The situation has become more than just an amusing local sight. Drivers have honked at Tom, while some people have gotten out of their vehicles to try to encourage him to move. Police and animal-control personnel have also responded when the turkey has been in the roadway.

Officer Aubrey Burd of South Hills Cooperative Animal Control said she regularly checks on Tom and has become familiar with his usual location.

“He is healthy,” Burd said, explaining why there has not been a need to remove or relocate him.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission believes the turkey has become comfortable in the area and suspects that people may be feeding him. Wildlife officials are asking residents and visitors not to provide food.

That request is important because feeding can encourage wild animals to remain close to people and roads instead of moving naturally through their habitat. The Game Commission notes that wild turkeys generally do not need artificial feeding, and feeding can unnaturally concentrate birds in one area and create additional risks.

For Tom, the roadside appears to offer plenty of entertainment. He has been seen visiting nearby businesses and restaurants and crossing the street as he moves around the area.

Heather Cabbagestalk, owner of Fresh Fork Cafe, said the turkey is both amusing and surprising for those who see him regularly.

The timing also comes as drivers in the area are already dealing with roadwork. PennDOT says overnight drainage work on Logan Road between Library Road and Bethel Church Road began September 15 and is scheduled to continue through late October, with alternating traffic restrictions on weeknights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

That means drivers approaching the area have another reason to stay alert, even before Tom decides it’s time for another walk across the road.

Pennsylvania is home to wild turkeys in every county, according to the Game Commission, and the state’s wild turkey population has recovered dramatically after falling to very low numbers in the early 1900s.

Tom may have found an unusual home among Bethel Park’s busy roads and businesses, but wildlife officials’ message is straightforward: admire him from a safe distance, give him plenty of room, and don’t feed him.

For motorists, that means slowing down when Tom appears, watching for other drivers reacting to him, and remembering that a few extra seconds of patience are safer than trying to force a wild turkey out of the roadway.
