Two Liberty High School students were killed and two other people were injured in a late-night crash near the Brentwood-Antioch area early Sunday, leaving the school community mourning the loss of two student-athletes.
The crash was reported at about 12:11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, near Deer Valley Road and Balfour Road. Antioch police said officers arrived about 10 minutes later and found a white BMW and a silver Infiniti involved in the collision.
Two people inside the Infiniti died at the scene. A third person traveling in the Infiniti was taken to a local hospital, while the BMW driver was also injured.
Liberty High School Principal Efa Huckaby later confirmed that the two people who died were students at the Brentwood school and that another Liberty student was injured in the crash. The three students were traveling in the same vehicle, according to subsequent reports.
The two students who died were 17-year-old boys from Discovery Bay and were members of Liberty High’s student-athlete community. One of the students was publicly identified by his family as Dominic Anthony Starkenberg Ferrari. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the other student while the investigation and family notification process continue.
The crash has deeply affected Liberty High, where students and staff were offered counseling and other support services as they dealt with the deaths of their classmates.
In a message to the school community, Huckaby expressed sympathy for the students’ families, friends, classmates and teammates and asked people to avoid rumors or unconfirmed information while authorities work to establish what happened.
The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation. Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact investigators.
Authorities have not announced a final determination of what caused the crash. The investigation remains active as detectives work to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.
