A 19-year-old was hospitalized after being shot four times during a gunfight in North Philadelphia Friday evening, according to Philadelphia police.
The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 near Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue. Police said the teenager was seen on surveillance video limping toward the SEPTA platform before leaving the area in a private vehicle for treatment.
He was taken to a nearby hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Investigators said the teenager was also believed to have been one of the people involved in the exchange of gunfire. Several shell casings were found in the area as officers secured the scene.
The investigation took another turn a short time later when police responded to a carjacking about five blocks away, near 16th and Clearfield streets.
According to police, a pizza delivery driver had left his Jeep running while making a delivery. His 14-year-old son was inside the vehicle when a man got into the SUV and drove away with the teenager still inside.
Police said the 14-year-old later escaped from the vehicle. Officers subsequently recovered the Jeep and arrested a person suspected in the carjacking.
Because the two incidents occurred within minutes of each other and only a few blocks apart, investigators initially considered whether they could be connected. Police later determined that the shooting and carjacking were separate incidents.
No arrest has been reported in connection with the shooting.
Investigators also have not identified a motive for the gunfire. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigations Group is handling the case as detectives work to determine what led to the shooting and identify those involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
