A 21-year-old Des Plaines man died after a police officer shot him Wednesday afternoon while responding to a reported domestic disturbance at a home on Touhy Avenue, authorities said.
Des Plaines police were called to the 2000 block of Touhy Avenue at about 2:32 p.m. Sept. 9 after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. During the response, an officer shot a male resident of the home.
The man was identified as Ayham Babidi, 21, of Des Plaines. Firefighters treated him at the scene before he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died, according to officials.
The circumstances that led to the shooting have not been released. Authorities have not said whether Babidi had a weapon or whether he threatened officers during the encounter.
Babidi’s father, Jamal Babidi, told that his son had a mental illness and did not own a gun. His comments raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the officer’s use of deadly force, though investigators have not yet released information explaining what happened inside the home.
The shooting brought a large police presence to the area. Touhy Avenue was closed between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street while investigators processed the scene, and motorists were asked to use alternate routes.
Neighbors described hearing yelling and screaming around the time of the shooting. A hedge trimmer was also seen in the roadway within the area secured by police, although authorities have not said whether the tool was connected to the incident.
The Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting and will conduct an independent review. Police have not released additional details about the officer involved or explained what immediately preceded the shooting.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected as investigators determine what happened during the domestic disturbance response.
