Two people were killed and another person was injured Saturday evening when a utility terrain vehicle crashed in the Bergoo area of Webster County, West Virginia.

The victims were identified as 24-year-old Maggie Driggs of Charleston and 43-year-old Richard Brian Chandler of Hurricane. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. along Bergoo Road. Emergency responders were alerted after an automated crash notification reported a possible collision, followed by a 911 call reporting that a side-by-side UTV had left the roadway and traveled about 75 feet down an embankment.

When responders reached the scene, they found that all three occupants had been thrown from the vehicle.

Driggs and Chandler died at the scene. The third occupant was transported to Webster Memorial Hospital for treatment and was later released. Authorities have not publicly identified that person.

Several emergency agencies were already in the Bergoo area for the annual Bergoo Bash, a UTV and ATV-focused event that supports the Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Their proximity allowed emergency crews and law enforcement to respond to the crash.

The responding agencies included the Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Webster Memorial EMS and West Virginia State Police.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released a cause or provided additional details about what led the UTV to leave the roadway.

Officials have also not released further information about the third occupant.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional details may be released as authorities continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
