Two people died Sunday after an SUV left Interstate 80 and crashed into an embankment near the Highway 113 interchange in Solano County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. on eastbound I-80. Investigators said a 2011 black Infiniti FX35 was traveling east when it veered off the roadway and struck an embankment along the right shoulder.
The driver, a 56-year-old woman from Dixon, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 65-year-old man from Vacaville, was seriously injured and died while being taken to a hospital.
A witness told investigators that the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel shortly before the SUV left the roadway. Authorities have not determined whether fatigue, alcohol, drugs or a medical issue played a role in the crash.
The names of the two people killed have not been released.
CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional cause has been confirmed at this time.
