A 20-year-old man has been charged with capital murder after two women were fatally shot Monday morning in Montgomery’s Gibbs Village community, authorities said.
Tarus Giles faces four counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of 25-year-old Undrea Willis and 19-year-old Nalyn Reeves.
Police and fire medics were called to the Gibbs Village housing community in west Montgomery shortly after 8:30 a.m. Monday following reports of a shooting. Responders found both women with fatal gunshot wounds, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Gibbs Circle, near Mobile Highway.
Two Women Identified as Victims
Montgomery police identified the victims as Willis, 25, and Reeves, 19.
Their deaths were the city’s 36th and 37th homicides of 2026, according to police.
Investigators have not publicly released a detailed account of what led to the shooting or explained why Giles is facing four capital murder counts in connection with the deaths of two victims.
Authorities also have not publicly disclosed a motive.
The case remains under investigation.
Police Increase Presence at Gibbs Village
The deadly shooting has raised additional concerns about safety in the Gibbs Village community.
Montgomery police said officers would increase their presence in the area following the killings. Lt. Willie Stewart said the department considers Gibbs Village a safe place for families and that additional officers would be deployed there.
Local officials have also discussed longer-term steps to improve security.
Montgomery Housing Authority CEO Monica Whiting said the agency is considering measures including fencing and controlled-access gates. The goal would be to better monitor who enters the community while giving residents a greater sense of security.
Officials are also considering programs at community centers focused on conflict resolution, anger management and other skills intended to help young people handle disputes before they escalate.
Mayor Addresses Recent Violence
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has also spoken about a series of recent violent incidents involving young people.
Reed said the recent cases are concerning to residents and to city officials. He emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of conflict or distress and finding ways to prevent disagreements from turning deadly.
Officials have not said that a particular dispute or conflict was responsible for the Gibbs Village shooting.
That determination will depend on the ongoing investigation.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are continuing to work to establish what happened before the shooting and what circumstances led to the deaths of Willis and Reeves.
Police have not released a public motive, and additional details about the evidence in the case have not been made available.
Giles is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
As the criminal case moves forward, the charges against Giles remain allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
