A man died after Boston police officers shot him during a tense encounter involving a large knife at a home in the Brighton neighborhood on Friday morning, October 30.
The incident unfolded shortly after 7 a.m. on Selkirk Road, where officers responded to an emergency call about a man who was reportedly threatening to hurt himself. Authorities said the situation appeared to involve a mental health crisis, and officers found the man holding a large knife when they arrived.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said officers spent approximately 20 minutes trying to calm the situation and persuade the man to put down the weapon. Additional officers and emergency medical personnel were positioned outside the home as police attempted to resolve the situation without using deadly force.
However, the encounter took a dangerous turn when the man reportedly moved the knife away from himself and charged toward officers near the home’s porch.
According to Cox, officers attempted to retreat but eventually one officer fired a single shot, striking the man in the stomach area. Police said the man was immediately given medical assistance and transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Another Person Safely Escorted From the Home
Authorities confirmed that another person was inside the residence during the incident. Officers were able to bring that individual outside safely.
No officers suffered serious physical injuries during the encounter. However, two officers were transported to a hospital for medical evaluations following the incident.
The officer who fired the shot has not been publicly identified. Commissioner Cox said the officer had been with the Boston Police Department for slightly more than two years.
Questions have also emerged about the availability of less-lethal equipment during the confrontation. Cox confirmed that some officers at the scene had Tasers, although investigators had not yet established whether the officer who fired the gun was carrying one.
District Attorney’s Office Launches Investigation
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is leading an investigation into the fatal shooting. Officials said the review will examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the actions taken by officers before the gunfire.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden indicated that investigators would review available body-camera footage as part of their effort to establish exactly what happened.
Hayden described the situation as difficult and unpredictable, emphasizing the importance of examining all the facts before reaching conclusions.
The Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association praised the officers for their response, saying they made efforts to de-escalate what it described as a dangerous and hostile situation before the firearm was discharged.
Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to the Tragedy
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also expressed sympathy for everyone affected by the incident.
In her statement, Wu acknowledged the difficult situations police officers and other first responders regularly encounter while carrying out their duties. She also expressed concern for the officers involved and offered condolences to those affected by the man’s death.
The shooting has raised renewed questions about how emergency responders handle situations involving people experiencing mental health crises, particularly when weapons are involved.
For now, investigators are working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. The man’s identity has not been released publicly, and further details about the circumstances surrounding the confrontation may become available as the investigation progresses.
