A 12-year-old girl was taken to a hospital after being found alone at a Dunkin’ in Charleston, West Virginia, following hours of wandering around her neighborhood, according to police. Authorities say the child weighed just 40 pounds, and investigators found no evidence that her parents had contacted emergency services to report her missing.
Clarence Spotsville and Nuwna Overton, both 33, have been charged with child neglect creating a risk of injury in connection with the incident. Court records indicate that both defendants posted $1,000 bonds and were released from custody.
The discovery has raised serious concerns about the girl’s condition, how long she was without supervision, and what happened before emergency responders found her.
Girl Found After Hours Away From Home
Police said the girl was discovered on October 12 at a Dunkin’ on Oakwood Road in Charleston, the state capital.
Investigators believe she had been walking around her neighborhood for approximately six hours before reaching the restaurant, which was about half a mile from her home.
When first responders encountered her, they observed signs of severe physical frailty. According to the Charleston Police Department, her weight was approximately 40 pounds, and officers could see the outlines of the bones in her hands and feet.
The girl was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
The circumstances prompted authorities to investigate not only how she came to be alone but also whether her living conditions and care had placed her at risk.
Police Questioned Whether Her Parents Sought Help
After identifying the girl’s residence, investigators went to the home she shared with Spotsville and Overton.
According to the criminal complaint, officers found no evidence that either parent had called 911 to report the child missing during the period she was away from home.
The complaint also described the girl’s physical condition as so weak that officers had to support her while taking a photograph to document her condition.
Those observations became part of the investigation that led to charges against both adults.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless found guilty through the legal process.
Other Children Were Reportedly in the Home
Authorities also indicated that other children were under the couple’s care. However, publicly available information did not immediately establish whether those children were removed from the home or what arrangements were made for their safety.
The 12-year-old girl’s medical condition and subsequent care were also not immediately clear.
Cases involving suspected child neglect can require investigators to examine several factors, including a child’s medical needs, access to food, supervision, living conditions and the actions taken by caregivers when a child may be in danger.
A child’s weight alone does not establish the cause of a medical condition. Determining whether neglect occurred requires consideration of the available medical evidence and the specific circumstances surrounding the child’s care.
In this case, police cited the girl’s condition and the circumstances in which she was found as part of their investigation.
What Happens Next in the Case?
Spotsville and Overton were charged with child neglect creating a risk of injury. Both posted $1,000 bonds and were released from jail while the case proceeds.
The defendants waived their preliminary hearing, which had been scheduled for Wednesday. A waiver generally means that a preliminary hearing will not take place as scheduled; it does not establish guilt or resolve the charges.
Further court proceedings will determine how the allegations are handled.
For now, several questions remain unanswered, including the full extent of the girl’s medical needs, what led her to leave home, and what steps authorities have taken to ensure the safety of the other children reportedly living there.
The investigation has placed renewed attention on the importance of recognizing possible signs of child neglect and ensuring that children who may be medically vulnerable receive timely care and appropriate supervision.
