A family already dealing with a painful divorce and child custody battle was left devastated after a 68-year-old Ohio woman was killed inside her own home. Now, the man accused of carrying out the attack has admitted responsibility, bringing the case closer to sentencing.

Jonathan Schmidt, 35, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and aggravated burglary in connection with the death of his mother-in-law, Marcia Van Druten, in Sylvania, Ohio. The killing happened on April 15, 2026, while Van Druten’s husband was asleep upstairs.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors are expected to seek dismissal of five additional charges, including another aggravated murder count. Schmidt could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is scheduled for November 23.

The case has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the attack, including reported threats made before the killing and the bitter family dispute that preceded it.

A family dispute that turned deadly

Schmidt was reportedly involved in a contentious divorce from Van Druten’s daughter, with disagreements over their young son and custody arrangements adding to the tension.

According to information presented by prosecutors, Schmidt had previously made threatening statements involving his wife and her mother. A witness reportedly told authorities in December 2025 that Schmidt had said he could not guarantee he would refrain from hurting either woman.

The family’s concerns reportedly intensified when one of Schmidt’s friends contacted his wife with a warning that he intended to harm her mother.

Emily Hayman, a friend of Schmidt’s wife, described how the warning prompted her friend to try reaching her mother by phone. When Van Druten did not answer, her daughter became frightened and contacted her father.

That call would lead to a devastating discovery.

The reported threats have become an important part of the case because they provide context for the events that unfolded at the Van Druten home. Prosecutors have described the attack as planned rather than a sudden confrontation.

Prosecutors describe how the attack unfolded

On the evening of April 15, Van Druten and her husband were at their home on Fox Hollow Court in Sylvania, near Toledo.

Prosecutors said Schmidt stopped at a Lowe’s store while traveling toward the residence and purchased a hammer and two crowbars.

Authorities allege that he later entered the home by smashing the sliding glass doors with a crowbar. At the time, Van Druten was sitting in a chair downstairs while her husband slept on the upper floor.

A camera positioned behind the house captured the sound of breaking glass, according to the account presented in court. Prosecutors said Van Druten could be heard screaming Schmidt’s name before the sounds stopped.

Her husband later went downstairs and discovered her body.

Authorities reported finding a crowbar on top of Van Druten’s body and blood throughout the room. She was pronounced dead from multiple blunt-force injuries.

The details described in court painted a disturbing picture of an attack inside what should have been a safe place for the victim and her family.

The arrest came the following morning

After the killing, Schmidt reportedly left Ohio and traveled to Michigan.

Authorities arrested him the next morning in La Salle, Michigan, approximately 25 miles northeast of the crime scene.

Investigators reportedly found glass fragments in his hood and pockets. Schmidt also allegedly confessed to multiple people that he had killed Van Druten.

Those details formed part of the investigation that led to the aggravated murder and burglary charges.

His guilty plea now means the case will move toward sentencing without a trial on the charges to which he admitted guilt. The court will determine the sentence under the applicable law and the terms of the proceedings.

A guilty plea brings the case closer to sentencing

Schmidt’s decision to plead guilty to aggravated murder and aggravated burglary marks a significant development for Van Druten’s family.

As part of the agreement, prosecutors said they would request dismissal of five other charges, including a second aggravated murder count.

Schmidt faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison without the chance of parole. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 23 in Lucas County.

The guilty plea establishes his responsibility for the offenses to which he pleaded guilty. The upcoming hearing will determine the punishment imposed by the court.

For the family, however, the legal outcome cannot undo the loss of a woman whose life was closely connected to her children and grandchildren.

    Remembering Marcia Van Druten

Beyond the criminal charges and courtroom proceedings, Van Druten’s family remembers her as someone who devoted herself to the people she loved.

Her obituary describes a woman whose life revolved around her family. She was known to her grandchildren as “Nammy” and played an active role in their lives, offering care, encouragement and guidance.

The family remembered her as much more than a grandmother. She was a teacher, a caregiver, a trusted friend and someone who helped create lasting memories for the children around her.

Her loss leaves a particularly painful gap for the grandchildren who spent so much of their time with her.

While the case has centered on the violence of her final moments, her family’s tribute offers a reminder that her life was defined by far more than the crime that ended it.

A tragic end to an already difficult family conflict

The killing unfolded against the backdrop of a troubled marriage, divorce proceedings and concerns about possible threats. Those circumstances are now part of the record surrounding a case that ended with a guilty plea to aggravated murder.

As Schmidt awaits sentencing, Van Druten’s family must continue coping with a loss that has permanently changed their lives.

The November hearing will mark the next major step in the legal process. For her loved ones, the hope is that the conclusion of the case will bring some measure of accountability as they remember a woman whose greatest priority was her family.
