Two young children are recovering after being seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Half Moon Bay, California, and a 37-year-old San Francisco man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday near Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The children, both 6 years old, were riding a bicycle when a vehicle struck them.
Authorities said the driver left the scene following the collision, prompting an investigation to identify the vehicle and locate the person behind the wheel.
Both children suffered serious injuries but were reported to be in stable condition.
Witness Description Helped Investigators Locate the Driver
According to investigators, a witness provided information about the vehicle and its driver after the crash. That description helped deputies narrow their search and locate a suspect in the surrounding area.
Authorities said deputies eventually found 37-year-old Robert Schumann hiding in a wooded area near Bancroft Avenue.
Investigators suspect Schumann was under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred. His arrest followed an investigation into the crash and the circumstances surrounding the driver’s departure from the scene.
Police have not publicly detailed every step of the investigation, but the witness account appears to have played an important role in helping authorities locate the suspect.
Multiple Charges Follow the Investigation
Schumann was arrested on suspicion of several offenses, including driving under the influence causing bodily injury and hit-and-run resulting in injury.
The sheriff’s office also listed allegations involving driving with a suspended license following a DUI conviction and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration above 0.01% while on probation.
These allegations remain subject to the legal process. An arrest does not establish guilt, and the charges will need to be addressed in court.
The investigation centers on both the collision itself and the allegation that the driver left without remaining at the scene.
Two Children Remain in Stable Condition
The children were seriously hurt in the crash, but authorities said both were in stable condition following the incident.
The circumstances are especially concerning because the children were only 6 years old and were riding a bicycle when they were struck.
Collisions involving young cyclists can result in severe injuries because children have less physical protection than occupants inside a vehicle. Even at neighborhood speeds, a vehicle impact can cause significant harm.
Authorities have not released additional details about the children’s injuries or identified their relationship to one another.
Why Hit-and-Run Investigations Matter
Leaving the scene of a crash involving injured people can create additional challenges for victims, emergency responders and investigators. Drivers involved in collisions are generally required to stop, provide necessary information and fulfill their legal duties, including arranging assistance for injured people.
When a driver leaves, witnesses may become crucial sources of information. Descriptions of a vehicle, its direction of travel and the person driving can help investigators identify a suspect and reconstruct what happened.
The Half Moon Bay case also highlights the dangers associated with suspected impaired driving. Alcohol can affect reaction time, judgment and coordination, increasing the risk of a collision and making it harder for drivers to respond to unexpected hazards.
For now, the two children are recovering while investigators continue addressing the circumstances of the crash.
The case remains a reminder of how quickly an ordinary afternoon ride can turn into a medical emergency, particularly when young cyclists share the road with motor vehicles.
