A night out with friends in Boston’s Allston neighborhood turned into a frightening fight for survival when three men were injured in a sudden machete attack. One of the victims, Noah Walsh, says the experience has changed how he looks at life and strengthened his determination to help prevent similar violence.

The attack happened around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, when Walsh and his two friends were out together. According to Walsh, a man approached the group without warning and began attacking them with a blade.

The encounter unfolded in seconds, leaving all three men with injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment.

“All of the sudden, he ran up to one of my first friends, stabbed him in the back,” Walsh recalled. “Nicked my hand, went into my shoulder, and then wound up in my neck.”

Although all three victims survived, Walsh said the blade came dangerously close to his jugular vein. He believes the outcome could have been very different if the weapon had struck just a little farther.

“Had the knife gone any farther, I likely would have bled out, potentially,” he said.

For Walsh, the physical injuries were only part of what made the experience so frightening. The suddenness of the attack and the possibility of losing his life have left him thinking more deeply about his future and what he wants to accomplish.

A second incident led police to a suspect

Four days after the reported attack, another incident involving a machete brought police to ABC Auto Works in Brighton.

Shop manager Gustavo Teo said 24-year-old Joshua Flores was outside the business, swinging a machete and talking to himself before officers arrived.

Teo described feeling frightened by what he witnessed but relieved when police responded.

“I had goosebumps and I was scared, but also just grateful that the police were there,” he said.

Officers arrested Flores in connection with the incident outside the auto shop. According to the police report, he initially faced charges related to a weapons violation and disorderly conduct.

Investigators subsequently determined that Flores matched the description provided in connection with the earlier Allston attack.

Boston police said the additional charges would include three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of mayhem.

The charges represent allegations, and the case must proceed through the legal system before guilt can be determined.

The connection between the two incidents gave investigators a potential lead in the Allston case and brought renewed attention to the frightening experience Walsh and his friends endured.

How surviving the attack changed Walsh’s outlook

Recovering from a violent encounter can bring a mix of emotions, including fear, uncertainty and gratitude for having survived. Walsh’s experience has also prompted him to think about how communities can reduce the circumstances that contribute to violence.

Rather than focusing only on what happened to him, he says he wants to help make sure other people do not experience the same kind of trauma.

Walsh hopes to address basic needs such as housing, education and access to food. He believes helping people obtain essential resources could play a role in preventing some forms of violence and making communities safer.

His goal reflects a broader conversation about public safety: responding to violent incidents is essential, but prevention also involves understanding the challenges people face and ensuring that appropriate support is available.

Stable housing, access to education, food assistance and community-based services can help address certain social challenges. However, no single intervention can prevent every violent act, and the circumstances behind this particular attack have not been fully established in the information available.

For Walsh, the important thing is finding a constructive way forward after an experience that could easily have left him focused entirely on his own injuries.

“I’m definitely looking forward to my future, and I want to prevent this from happening to anyone else, ever,” he said.

A frightening reminder of how quickly violence can unfold

The Allston attack highlights how quickly an ordinary night can turn dangerous. Walsh and his friends were together in the early morning hours when, according to his account, the assault began without warning.

All three survived, but Walsh’s neck injury illustrates how close the encounter came to having a fatal outcome.

The subsequent arrest following the Brighton incident also underscores the importance of reporting suspicious activity and responding promptly when someone appears to pose an immediate threat.

Anyone who encounters an immediate danger should move to a safe location and contact emergency services rather than attempting to confront an armed person.

As Walsh continues looking ahead, he hopes his experience can serve a purpose beyond recounting what happened. He wants to use the second chance he believes he has been given to support others and encourage efforts that make neighborhoods safer.

For the survivor and his friends, the night of October 4 will remain a painful memory. But Walsh is determined that it will not define the rest of his life.

His message is focused on the future: surviving a frightening experience has made him more determined to help others and work toward a community where fewer people have to endure the same kind of violence.
