A honeymoon lunch in Puerto Rico took an unexpected turn when a Massachusetts fire chief spotted smoke coming from a nearby restaurant and stepped in to help contain the blaze before it could spread.

Dante Suarez, chief of the Fitchburg Fire Department, was enjoying time with his wife in Luquillo when he noticed people reacting to a commotion next door. A closer look revealed smoke coming from a restaurant, prompting him to investigate.

Although Suarez was more than 1,000 miles from home and had none of his usual firefighting equipment, his professional instincts quickly took over.

“We were right next door when I heard some excitement,” Suarez recalled. “Looked over, saw some smoke.”

He approached the restaurant’s bartender to find out what was happening. After confirming that everyone had evacuated, Suarez learned that the fire had started in the kitchen.

With no sprinkler system or built-in kitchen fire suppression system available, the situation required immediate action using portable fire extinguishers.

Firefighters’ instincts kicked in far from home

Suarez began working with the restaurant staff to tackle the flames. However, the first extinguisher was not enough to bring the situation under control.

As the smoke grew thicker and the heat spread from the kitchen into the dining area, he realized they needed additional equipment.

He asked employees to collect fire extinguishers from neighboring restaurants. The staff responded quickly, lining up the extinguishers so Suarez could continue fighting the fire.

Each time he finished using one, the bartender was ready with another.

The growing heat and smoke made the situation increasingly concerning. Suarez worried that flames could reach the kitchen’s ventilation system and spread into the roof, potentially making the fire much more difficult to contain.

A kitchen fire can escalate rapidly when flames reach grease deposits, cooking equipment or ventilation ducts. Commercial kitchens often rely on specialized suppression systems to control fires involving cooking oils and equipment, making the absence of such a system an important challenge in this situation.

Despite those risks, Suarez and the restaurant staff continued working to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the kitchen.

Seven or eight extinguishers helped contain the blaze

The effort required several rounds of firefighting before the flames were finally extinguished.

Suarez estimated that he used seven or eight portable fire extinguishers to put out the fire and cool the affected area enough to prevent it from flaring up again.

“We contained the fire to just the kitchen and put it out with the common extinguishers,” he said, explaining that the flames did not spread beyond that area.

However, the group was still waiting for professional emergency responders to arrive.

Suarez said the fire department’s response took approximately 30 to 40 minutes. During that time, he and the restaurant employees worked to keep the situation from becoming more dangerous.

His experience gave him an understanding of how quickly a seemingly contained kitchen fire can threaten an entire building, particularly when smoke begins filling adjoining areas.

Although he was off duty, the decision to help came naturally to him.

    Restaurant kitchen suffered significant damage

The fire was eventually brought under control, and everyone made it out safely. However, the kitchen sustained substantial damage, leaving the restaurant facing repairs and the replacement of much of its equipment.

Suarez spoke with the restaurant’s owner after the incident. Despite the damage, the hope is that the business can reopen once the necessary work is completed.

For a restaurant, a damaged kitchen can mean more than replacing appliances. Repairs may also involve cleaning smoke residue, inspecting electrical and ventilation systems, and ensuring that cooking equipment and fire protection measures are safe before operations resume.

The full extent of the repairs and the restaurant’s reopening timeline were not specified.

A honeymoon moment he will not forget

For Suarez, the incident was an unexpected interruption to a special trip with his wife. Yet he did not view the experience as an inconvenience.

Rather than focusing on being away from work, he said he was simply glad he could help people who needed assistance.

“I don’t want to say it was work,” Suarez said. “I’m glad I could help somebody. That’s all.”

His response reflects the instincts that often come with years of emergency service: recognizing danger, assessing the immediate situation and looking for ways to protect people.

Still, portable extinguishers have limits. Fire safety guidance generally emphasizes using them only when a fire is small and there is a clear escape route, while ensuring that everyone has evacuated and emergency services have been contacted. Fires involving heavy smoke or rapidly spreading flames can become dangerous quickly.

In this case, the restaurant staff’s cooperation and Suarez’s experience helped keep the fire confined to the kitchen until the flames were extinguished.

What began as an ordinary honeymoon lunch became an unexpected emergency, but the outcome could have been much worse. Everyone escaped safely, and the restaurant’s owner is now looking toward repairs and a possible reopening.

For Suarez, the incident was a reminder that helping others does not always happen during a scheduled shift. Sometimes, it happens when a person least expects it, in a place far from home.
