A school day in Bend, Oregon, turned into a devastating tragedy Thursday after a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School left four people dead, including three children and a teacher, authorities said. Two other victims, including a young student and another teacher, were critically injured.
Police identified the suspected shooter as a 16-year-old male who was also killed at the scene after a community member confronted him inside the school, according to Bend police.
The victims who died were children ages 5, 8 and 11, along with a teacher, Police Chief Mike Krantz said during a news conference Thursday evening. The two injured victims were a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher. Both were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries.
Authorities had not released the victims’ names as of Thursday night. Investigators also had not established a motive or confirmed whether the teenager had any connection to the school.
Police Responded Within Minutes
The first emergency call came shortly before 1 p.m., when a person reported being shot at several times while inside a vehicle. The caller described a suspect carrying a long gun, Krantz said.
Additional emergency calls soon followed, with dispatchers receiving reports that the suspect had entered Silver Rail Elementary School.
According to police, the suspect forced entry by firing at locked doors. Officers reached the school within approximately three minutes of the initial 911 call.
When they arrived, they learned that a community member had already confronted and fatally shot the suspect.
Krantz said the bystander had seen the armed teenager enter the school, followed him inside and intervened.
Investigators have not publicly released the bystander’s identity or additional details about the encounter. Authorities have also not confirmed the precise type of firearm used in the shooting or the number of shots fired.
Some reports citing law enforcement sources identified the weapon as a shotgun, but the investigation into the circumstances of the attack remains ongoing.
Students and Staff Evacuated to Safety
As officers secured the building, students and school employees were evacuated and taken to a nearby church, where families could reunite with their children.
For parents waiting for information, the hours following the shooting brought fear and uncertainty as authorities worked to account for students and staff and establish what had happened inside the school.
The district announced that all schools would cancel classes and athletic activities on Friday following the tragedy.
School officials were left facing the immediate task of supporting students, families and employees dealing with the aftermath of the violence.
Bend-La Pine Superintendent Steven Cook described the shooting as an unimaginable loss for the community.
“No community should have to do what we are doing right now,” Cook said during the news conference, acknowledging the grief surrounding the school.
Community Member Praised for Intervention
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the community member who confronted the suspect, saying the intervention helped prevent further loss of life.
She also recognized the emotional weight that such an encounter can carry for someone who witnesses or responds to a violent emergency.
The circumstances of the confrontation remain part of the investigation, and officials have not released further information about the individual involved.
The FBI’s local office was assisting Bend police, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Oregon State Police were also involved in the response, according to officials and law enforcement sources.
Investigators are expected to examine the events leading up to the shooting, how the suspect entered the building, and any available evidence that could help explain the attack.
Authorities have not announced a motive.
A Difficult Day for Oregon Families
The shooting has left families in Bend grieving and raised renewed concerns about safety at elementary schools, where children spend much of their day learning and building relationships with classmates and teachers.
Elementary school students are among the youngest members of a school community, making the impact of a violent incident particularly difficult for families and educators.
In the immediate aftermath, school districts typically focus on confirming that students and staff are safe, communicating with parents and arranging emotional support for those affected. Counselors and other trained professionals can help children process frightening events in ways appropriate to their age.
For parents, clear and timely communication from school officials can be especially important when information is still emerging.
The decision to cancel classes and athletic activities gives the district time to respond to the crisis while families and school employees begin confronting the loss.
School Shootings Remain a National Concern
The tragedy in Bend adds to a continuing national debate about violence on school campuses and the measures needed to protect students and staff.
According to the K-12 School Shooting Database figures cited in the original report, the United States recorded 235 shooting incidents at K-12 schools in 2025. At least 149 incidents had been recorded in 2026 at the time of that report, including the attack in Bend.
These figures depend on the database’s definition of a school shooting and should not be interpreted as a count of incidents in which someone was necessarily killed or injured. Different databases use different criteria, which can produce different totals.
Even so, school shootings continue to place pressure on educators, law enforcement agencies and policymakers to examine prevention, emergency preparedness and the availability of support for affected communities.
Experts commonly emphasize the importance of reporting credible threats, maintaining effective communication between schools and law enforcement, and ensuring that students and staff know how to respond during an emergency. No single measure can guarantee that a school will be safe, but prevention and preparedness remain central parts of school safety planning.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet provided answers to several key questions about the shooting, including why the teenager targeted the school, whether he knew any of the victims and how he obtained the weapon.
Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events and review available evidence before drawing conclusions about what led to the attack.
For now, the focus remains on the victims, the injured and the families whose lives have been changed by the violence.
Gov. Kotek expressed the grief felt across the state, emphasizing that no parent or community should have to experience such a tragedy.
As Bend begins to mourn the four people killed and support those recovering from critical injuries, the investigation continues into one of the community’s darkest days.
