A Florida man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he shot his girlfriend outside a bar, then drove over her as he fled with his 5-year-old daughter and their dog inside his vehicle.
The incident happened Tuesday night near Harbor Bar in Safety Harbor, Florida. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Jessica Antolini, was reported to be in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.
Christopher Smith, 40, was arrested shortly after the shooting. According to investigators, he had arrived at the bar with his young daughter and their dog before becoming involved in an argument with Antolini outside the establishment.
The case has raised serious concerns about the child’s safety, particularly because she was reportedly present during the incident and remained in the vehicle as her father drove away.
What Happened Outside Harbor Bar?
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Smith entered Harbor Bar at approximately 8:45 p.m., leaving his daughter and dog in the parking lot.
He later came outside with Antolini, and the two began arguing. During the confrontation, investigators allege, Smith shot Antolini before getting into his vehicle and leaving the scene.
As he drove away, he allegedly ran over her with the car.
Witnesses called 911 to report the shooting and provided information about the vehicle involved. Deputies began searching for Smith and located him a short time later.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged attack in the information available about the case.
Deputies Find Smith With His Young Daughter
Dashcam and body camera footage released by authorities captured the moments deputies caught up with Smith.
After stopping his vehicle, Smith stepped out with his hands raised and followed officers’ commands. Deputies could be heard ordering him to get on the ground as they approached.
Smith complied and told officers that he would not resist.
During the encounter, he also alerted deputies that his daughter was inside the vehicle.
“My daughter’s in there,” Smith told the deputies, according to the footage.
The child could then be heard crying out, “My doggy!” as officers removed her from the car.
The emotional moment highlighted the young girl’s presence during a violent incident that authorities say left her mother seriously injured.
According to the sheriff’s office, Smith also told deputies he did not know where the gun was and suggested it might still be inside the vehicle.
Officers took him into custody without further incident.
Child Placed With Other Family Members
The 5-year-old girl was not reported to have suffered physical injuries in the incident. However, authorities treated her presence during the alleged attack as a significant concern.
Smith was charged with first-degree attempted murder and child abuse. A judge denied bond on the attempted murder charge and ordered Smith to have no contact with his daughter.
The child was placed in the care of other family members.
Cases involving children who witness violence can raise concerns beyond immediate physical safety. Young children may struggle to understand what happened, and exposure to frightening events can affect their emotional well-being. Support from trusted caregivers and, when appropriate, qualified professionals can help them feel safe and supported.
Officials have not publicly detailed what additional support the child may receive.
Victim Remained in Critical Condition
Antolini was reported to be in critical condition as of Wednesday evening. The available information did not establish whether her condition had changed since that update.
The investigation centers on the shooting, the alleged use of the vehicle against Antolini and the circumstances surrounding the child’s presence during the incident.
Investigators also collected witness accounts and reviewed footage from the deputies’ encounter with Smith.
The case remains a criminal matter, and the allegations against Smith have not been proven in court.
What Happens Next?
Smith’s charges carry serious potential consequences if he is convicted. First-degree attempted murder and child abuse are separate allegations, and each must be addressed through the legal process.
The judge’s no-contact order also restricts Smith from contacting his daughter while the order remains in effect.
Authorities have not announced a final outcome for the case, and Antolini’s recovery remains a key concern following the incident.
For now, the investigation serves as a reminder of how quickly a confrontation can escalate into a life-threatening situation, especially when children are nearby. What began as an alleged argument outside a neighborhood bar ended with a woman critically injured, a child removed from a frightening scene and a father facing major criminal charges.
