A 54-year-old Tennessee woman is facing an aggravated child abuse charge after authorities accused her of striking a 5-year-old student in the face with a hard lunchbox at an elementary school.

Jennifer Reynolds was arrested following the reported incident at Rhea Elementary School in Paris, Tennessee, on October 6, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators allege that Reynolds hit the child on the right side of the face with the lunchbox while at the school. The case has raised concerns about the responsibility of adults assigned to support young children who need additional assistance during the school day.

The child’s parents said they were notified shortly after the incident. According to their account, Reynolds was escorted off campus, while the student was taken to the school nurse.

Although the incident has prompted understandable concern, the allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal case, and Reynolds is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Why the Child Had a Therapist at School

Reynolds was identified as an applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapist who appeared to have been assigned to work with the young student.

ABA therapy uses principles of learning and behavior to help individuals develop practical skills, improve communication and navigate everyday situations. It is commonly used to support some children with autism and other developmental needs, although individual treatment goals vary.

In school settings, a therapist or behavioral support professional may work directly with a student to help manage difficult situations, follow routines, communicate needs and participate in classroom activities.

The child’s mother explained that her son received this support to help him through the school day, particularly when he experienced anxiety or behavioral challenges.

She described the role as having someone at school who could support her child and help him manage whatever difficulties arose during the day.

That responsibility makes the allegations particularly troubling for the family. Professionals assigned to support children are expected to maintain appropriate boundaries, follow established safety procedures and respond to challenging behavior without resorting to physical aggression.

Parents Say the School Responded Quickly

The student’s parents said school officials informed them about the incident and took steps to address the immediate situation.

The child was brought to the school nurse after the alleged strike, while Reynolds was removed from the campus.

Despite what happened, the family indicated that it remained comfortable with the child returning to Rhea Elementary School. The mother also said they would no longer use the ABA company associated with the therapist.

Their decision highlights two separate concerns for families: ensuring that children can safely return to their classrooms and determining whether outside service providers meet the standards expected when working with young students.

Schools that use outside therapists or behavioral support providers may have procedures governing campus access, staff supervision, incident reporting and communication with parents. The details of the arrangements involving Reynolds and the school have not been fully established publicly.

    Arrest and Upcoming Court Appearance

Reynolds was arrested on October 8, two days after the alleged incident, according to the reported case details.

She posted bond and was released within hours of being booked.

She is scheduled to appear in court on October 20. The upcoming appearance is expected to be an important step in the legal proceedings, although the available information does not establish what will happen at that hearing.

The aggravated child abuse charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. Any determination of criminal responsibility will depend on the legal process and the evidence presented.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged incident, and further details about the investigation have not been confirmed.

What Families Should Know About School-Based Therapy

The case also serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding who provides behavioral support to children in educational settings.

Parents can ask schools and therapy providers about staff qualifications, background checks, supervision arrangements, procedures for reporting injuries and how families will be notified when a safety concern arises.

For children who experience anxiety or need additional behavioral assistance, consistent support and a safe learning environment are especially important. Therapists and other professionals should use appropriate, evidence-based methods and follow established safeguards when a child becomes distressed or has difficulty managing behavior.

For now, the case against Reynolds remains pending as she awaits her next court appearance. The child’s family has indicated that it intends to discontinue services through the company involved, while the legal process will determine how the allegations are resolved.
