An Indiana mother is facing multiple felony charges after police say she drove an SUV while intoxicated, crashed into a truck, and left the scene while several children remained inside the overturned vehicle. One of the children reportedly suffered a broken rib.

Mia Kelli Winkel, 31, was arrested following the crash in Anderson, a city about 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Investigators allege that she fled on foot after the collision, leaving emergency responders to find the injured children inside the damaged SUV.

The case has raised serious concerns about the risks children can face when an impaired driver gets behind the wheel, particularly when young passengers depend on that adult for their safety.

Police Find SUV on Its Side After Collision

The incident began near the intersection of 23rd Street and Central Avenue in Anderson, where police officers responded to reports of a crash.

When first responders arrived, they found a black SUV overturned on its side and leaning against a power pole. Several children were inside the vehicle, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

A witness reportedly told investigators that the SUV had struck a truck before flipping over and hitting the pole. The driver allegedly climbed out of the wrecked vehicle and ran away from the scene.

Emergency personnel had to focus on the people injured in the collision while officers began looking for the person who had been driving the SUV.

According to the allegations, one child riding in Winkel’s vehicle suffered a broken rib. A child in the truck involved in the collision reportedly sustained a broken arm.

The injuries added to the seriousness of the investigation, as authorities worked to establish what happened before the crash and why the driver allegedly left without remaining at the scene.

Officers Locate the Suspect Near the Crash Site

Police later identified Winkel as the alleged driver and located her at her home in the 2200 block of Main Street, approximately three blocks from where the collision occurred.

Officers reported that she appeared highly upset and could not stand without assistance when they took her into custody.

During transport to St. Vincent Hospital for a medical evaluation, Winkel allegedly acknowledged responsibility for the crash multiple times. She also repeatedly asked officers whether anyone had died, according to the allegations described in court records.

At the hospital, she reportedly told officers that she could not remember the crash or even driving the SUV.

A portable breath test allegedly registered her blood alcohol concentration at 0.221. Medical staff subsequently collected a blood sample for additional testing.

For context, the legal blood alcohol concentration limit for most adult drivers in Indiana is 0.08%. A reported reading of 0.221 is nearly 2.8 times that limit. The portable test result is part of the reported investigation; the final blood-test findings and their role in the case would be determined through the legal process.

Alcohol impairment can affect balance, coordination, reaction time and judgment. Those effects can make it significantly harder for a driver to respond to sudden hazards, control a vehicle or protect passengers during an emergency.

    Six Felony Charges Filed

Winkel faces six felony counts connected to the crash, according to court records.

    The charges include:

    • One count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.
    • Two counts of causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
    • Three counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.

Prosecutors have also filed a notice indicating their intent to seek habitual offender status, a designation that can carry additional consequences if the legal requirements are met and the court grants the request.

Winkel appeared for her initial hearing in Madison County on October 8. She is being held in the Madison County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The date of her next court appearance had not been established in the available reports.

The charges represent allegations, and Winkel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Why Leaving a Crash Scene Can Make an Emergency Worse

After a serious collision, remaining at the scene can be critical to protecting injured passengers and other people involved. Emergency responders need accurate information about the number of occupants, possible injuries and the circumstances surrounding the crash.

When a driver leaves, those details may be harder to establish immediately. Injured children can be particularly vulnerable because they may have difficulty explaining their symptoms or communicating what happened.

Indiana law generally requires drivers involved in crashes resulting in injury to stop, remain at the scene and provide the information and assistance required by law. Leaving a scene involving serious bodily injury can result in significant criminal penalties.

The allegations in Winkel’s case involve both the reported injuries and her alleged departure from the crash site. Prosecutors will need to establish the elements of each charge through the court process.

    What Happens Next?

The next stage of the case will likely involve further court proceedings, review of the evidence and consideration of the charges filed against Winkel.

Investigators may rely on witness accounts, medical records, chemical-test results and evidence from the crash scene as the case moves forward. The results of the additional blood testing could also be relevant to determining the extent of the alleged impairment.

For now, the case remains a criminal proceeding, and the allegations have not been established as facts in court.

The reported injuries to the children and the circumstances surrounding the overturned SUV remain central to the investigation as authorities pursue the case in Madison County.
