A disturbing double homicide in Mobile, Alabama, has raised questions about a family’s attempts to get help hours before two women were found dead inside their home.

Thomas Steele, 47, is facing a capital murder charge involving two or more victims in connection with the deaths of his aunt, Christy Deloach, and his grandmother, Dora Boone, according to authorities.

Police responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday to a home in the 2400 block of Carolina Court for a death investigation. Officers discovered both women dead inside, with investigators reporting that they had suffered fatal decapitation injuries.

The case took an especially troubling turn after details emerged about a 911 call made earlier that day. During the call, Deloach reportedly told a dispatcher that Steele had stopped taking his prescribed lithium medication and was acting unusually.

According to the account of the call, she was concerned about his behavior but said he was not violent at the time.

Hours later, she and Boone were dead.

911 Call Raised Concerns Before the Killings

The events leading up to the killings began earlier Monday, when Deloach contacted emergency services because she was worried about her nephew’s behavior.

She reportedly told the dispatcher that Steele had stopped taking lithium and had begun doing things that seemed out of character. Among her concerns was that he had given away his phone and car and was talking about living for God without using electronic devices.

The dispatcher asked whether Steele needed an ambulance. Deloach declined, explaining that he appeared calm and was not acting violently.

“I just needed to figure out what to do,” she reportedly told the dispatcher.

She also said she had contacted the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in an attempt to talk with him.

When asked again about the possibility of violence or harm, Deloach reportedly said Steele was not violent and expressed uncertainty about what steps to take next.

“I called 988 and tried to talk to him. He’s calm! He’s not violent or anything. So, I guess I’ll just let it play itself out,” she said, according to the reported transcript.

The dispatcher provided her with the police department’s phone number before the call ended.

The available account does not establish whether additional assistance was requested or what happened inside the home during the hours that followed. By early afternoon, officers had arrived at the address and discovered the two women dead.

Another Woman Was Reportedly Inside the Home

Investigators also learned that another woman with special needs was inside the residence during the incident. She was reportedly found unharmed.

Authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances surrounding the woman’s presence in the home or what she may have witnessed.

The discovery adds another layer to an already disturbing investigation, as detectives work to determine the sequence of events leading to the deaths of Deloach and Boone.

Police have identified Steele as the suspect and charged him with capital murder involving two or more victims. The charge reflects the seriousness of the allegations, but the case remains subject to the criminal justice process.

Suspect Allegedly Threatened Lawyer in Court

Steele’s behavior reportedly continued to raise concerns after his arrest.

During his first court appearance, a judge appointed him a public defender. Steele allegedly responded by saying, “kill him,” according to a courtroom report.

The judge subsequently ordered Steele removed from the courtroom.

He remains in the Mobile Metro Jail without bond as the case moves forward.

The alleged statement during the hearing is a separate development from the killings themselves, but it has drawn attention to the concerns about his behavior reported before the deaths.

Authorities have not established publicly whether his reported medication use or mental state played a role in the alleged crimes. Those questions would require further evidence and, where relevant, professional evaluation.

What the 911 Call Reveals About a Difficult Emergency

The reported conversation has also highlighted how difficult it can be for family members to respond when someone begins behaving in an alarming or unfamiliar way.

Deloach was reportedly trying to understand what was happening and had already attempted to contact a crisis service. Because she described Steele as calm and nonviolent, she declined the ambulance offered by the dispatcher.

However, a person does not need to be visibly violent for a sudden behavioral change to warrant concern. Giving away important possessions, making unusual statements or abruptly changing established routines may justify seeking professional guidance, particularly when those changes occur together.

Lithium is a prescription medication commonly used to treat bipolar disorder and certain other psychiatric conditions. Stopping or changing prescribed medication without medical supervision can carry risks, although the circumstances of Steele’s treatment and any connection to the alleged killings have not been established publicly.

The 988 Lifeline provides free, confidential support in the United States for people experiencing emotional distress or mental health-related crises. In situations involving an immediate threat to someone’s safety, emergency services may be necessary.

The circumstances of this case remain under investigation, and the reported 911 call alone cannot establish what might have happened if a different decision had been made.

    Investigation Continues in Mobile

The deaths of Christy Deloach and Dora Boone have left investigators examining both the alleged violence inside the home and the events that preceded it.

The central questions include what happened between the morning emergency call and the police response, what evidence links Steele to the killings, and whether additional details will clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

For now, Steele faces a capital murder charge and remains jailed without bond. The allegations against him have not yet been tested at trial, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The case remains a deeply troubling example of a family emergency that escalated into a deadly incident, with the earlier call for help now forming an important part of the investigation.
