A woman walking home with groceries was killed in a late-night hit-and-run in Jackson, Mississippi, and investigators say evidence recovered from a damaged SUV helped them identify a suspect more than a month after the collision.

Patrick Imafidon, 45, has been charged with culpable-negligence manslaughter and felony leaving the scene in connection with the death of Pamela Ellis, 56. Authorities say Ellis was struck by a white GMC Yukon on September 5, and the driver allegedly left without remaining at the scene.

The case took a significant step forward in October when investigators located the SUV and arrested Imafidon.

Crash Happened Late at Night in Jackson

The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of North State Street and Briarwood Drive.

According to investigators, Ellis was walking home carrying groceries when the white GMC Yukon struck her. The crash prompted an investigation into the vehicle involved and the identity of the person behind the wheel.

The late-night timing and the need to locate a vehicle that had reportedly sustained substantial damage made surveillance footage an important part of the investigation.

Police reviewed video from nearby businesses that appeared to show a Yukon in the area around the time of the collision. Additional footage reportedly captured a similar vehicle with significant damage to its front end.

Investigators also noticed what appeared to be white Styrofoam plates lodged in the SUV’s grille. Police said similar material was found at the location where Ellis was struck, providing another potential link between the vehicle and the crash.

Public Tips Helped Investigators Locate the SUV

As the investigation continued, Jackson police asked the public for assistance in identifying the driver and finding the vehicle.

The request generated tips and received attention from community members who shared the information. Authorities said those efforts helped them track down the SUV and identify Imafidon.

Police announced on October 7 that the vehicle had been recovered. The following day, authorities announced Imafidon’s arrest.

The timeline highlights how surveillance recordings and information provided by members of the public can help investigators pursue hit-and-run cases when a driver has not been immediately identified.

However, the charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal system.

Residents Had Previously Raised Concerns About Traffic

The fatal collision also drew attention to traffic conditions along North State Street.

In the days following the crash, local residents described speeding and heavy traffic as ongoing concerns in the area. Vicky McCrimmon said vehicles frequently traveled through the area at high speeds, making it particularly important for pedestrians and families with children to remain cautious.

Another resident, Amy Montes, stressed that drivers involved in collisions should stop and seek assistance rather than leave the scene.

Their comments reflected broader concerns about pedestrian safety on busy roads, where people walking near moving traffic can be especially vulnerable.

Although the available information does not establish that speeding caused this particular collision, residents’ concerns have kept road safety part of the community’s discussion following Ellis’ death.

    Judge Sets Bond at $105,000

Imafidon appeared in Jackson Municipal Court on October 8.

A judge set his bond at a total of $105,000, consisting of $75,000 for the culpable-negligence manslaughter charge and $30,000 for the felony charge of leaving the scene.

The charges address the alleged circumstances surrounding Ellis’ death and the driver’s reported departure from the crash scene. The allegations have not, by themselves, established guilt.

As of the latest available information, authorities had not announced a date for Imafidon’s next court appearance.

Investigation Brings Focus to Pedestrian Safety

Ellis’ death has renewed attention to the risks pedestrians face when sharing busy roads with vehicles, particularly at night.

Visibility, traffic speed and driver attention can all affect pedestrian safety. For drivers, remaining alert around people walking near roadways is essential, while prompt reporting and assistance after a collision can be critical in an emergency.

The investigation into Ellis’ death has also demonstrated the potential value of business surveillance footage and community tips in identifying vehicles connected to serious crashes.

For now, the legal case against Imafidon remains ongoing. Investigators’ findings, along with any evidence presented in court, will help determine how the case moves forward.
