An 8-year-old Plymouth-area boy facing months of cancer treatment is getting support from people across the Metro Detroit community, as his family works to help him through a difficult year.

Matthew Juarez was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly before Thanksgiving last year after his mother, Lana Juarez, initially thought his headaches might be related to seasonal allergies. Doctors eventually discovered a large tumor in his brain, leading to emergency surgery.

Matthew underwent a 14-hour operation to remove the tumor and spent weeks in the hospital afterward. His treatment has continued since then, including chemotherapy, and his family says he still has several months of treatment ahead.

Despite everything he has been through, Matthew continues to find ways to stay connected with the things he enjoys. He likes Spider-Man, Curious George and spending time with his dog, Nina. During treatment, he also keeps himself occupied with videos and the comfort of an emotional-support puppet.

His family says his positive attitude has helped him keep going through long and difficult days.

The cancer diagnosis has also changed life for his mother. Lana said she has had to step away from work so she can focus on Matthew’s care. Although relatives have helped the family, the ongoing treatment has brought additional financial and practical challenges.

Community members have responded by organizing fundraisers to support Matthew and his family. A bowling fundraiser is planned this weekend, giving friends and supporters a chance to come together while raising money for his care.

Matthew has also been recognized by the local Plymouth-Canton community. Earlier this month, he was among three local children honored during an annual Pink Out event for children battling cancer.

Additional community efforts are also supporting the Juarez family. A 2026 fundraising event organized around Matthew’s story notes that donations can help with ongoing treatment expenses, travel for specialized medical care and the financial impact of time away from work.

For Matthew, the support means more than financial assistance. He said he enjoys seeing his friends and other people come out to support him while he goes through treatment.

His mother says Matthew’s kindness and determination have remained visible even during some of the hardest moments of his illness.

“He’s so genuine and sweet,” Lana said. “He’s been brave throughout all of this.”

For a child whose routine has been replaced by hospital visits and treatment, the support from family, friends, classmates and neighbors has become an important part of his journey.

Matthew still has treatment ahead, but his family hopes the continued support of the Metro Detroit community will help them get through the months to come.
