The crash happened near Exit 34 shortly after 2 p.m., when emergency crews were called to reports of a person in the northbound roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the vehicle involved was a black-and-red truck with a dump truck body. The driver did not remain at the scene, and authorities had not publicly identified the operator as of the latest update.

The circumstances leading up to the person being in the roadway have not been released.

The investigation brought together Massachusetts State Police, Wilmington police, fire and EMS crews, MassDOT and investigators assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. State Police personnel from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Detectives Unit were also involved in the response.

The crash caused significant disruption on I-93 North during the afternoon. Three right-hand lanes were closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene, leaving traffic to move through the remaining lane. All lanes were later reopened, with the closures ending before the evening commute.

Investigators are asking anyone who saw the crash or may have information about the truck or its driver to contact the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit at 781-897-6600. The number is also listed by Massachusetts State Police for its Middlesex County detective unit.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released the identity of the person who died or announced an arrest in connection with the hit-and-run.
