A 23-year-old man was injured in a shooting outside a birthday party in Bridgeport late Friday night, police said.
The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. near the intersection of Wood Avenue and Grove Street. Police responded after 911 callers reported hearing several gunshots in the area, while a ShotSpotter alert also indicated possible gunfire nearby.
When officers arrived, they found four parked vehicles that had been struck by bullets, adding to the evidence that multiple shots had been fired in the area.
The injured man was not initially taken directly to the hospital by ambulance. Police said someone driving him to St. Vincent’s Hospital came across an ambulance and police vehicles several blocks away, near Lexington Avenue and Grand Street. The driver stopped there, allowing medics to evaluate the victim before transporting him to the hospital.
Investigators said the man told police he had been attending a birthday party at a home on Grove Street. He was standing outside the house with his back toward the street when a shot was fired from a passing vehicle and struck him.
The victim, who is from Hamden, suffered an injury to his lower extremities. He was reported to be in stable condition.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including who fired the shots and why the victim was targeted, remain unclear. Investigators are continuing to work to determine what happened and identify the vehicle involved.
Anyone with information that could help investigators is encouraged to contact Bridgeport police.
