A 33-year-old man died Sunday morning after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle through Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood, according to police.
The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. near the intersection of West Lake Street and North Homan Avenue. Police said the cyclist was traveling west on Lake Street when he was hit by a two-door sedan traveling through the area.
The bicyclist suffered serious trauma in the collision and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the sedan also suffered an injury to his hand but declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Police have not released the cyclist’s identity, and no citations had been issued as of the latest available information. Citations are pending as investigators continue reviewing what led to the collision.
The crash occurred in the 200 block of North Homan Avenue, an area where Lake Street runs through East Garfield Park. The location was initially reported incorrectly elsewhere, but authorities later clarified that the fatal collision occurred in Garfield Park.
No additional details about the circumstances of the crash or whether any other factors contributed to the collision were immediately available.
The investigation remains ongoing.
