An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed multiple times Friday afternoon during an apparent attempted robbery in the Norwood section of the Bronx, sending the officer to the hospital and prompting a search for two suspects who fled on an e-bike.
The attack happened shortly before 2 p.m. near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue. Police said the detective was seriously injured during the confrontation and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. Later reports said his condition had stabilized.
According to preliminary information, the confrontation began around the detective’s vehicle. Investigators believe the incident involved an attempted robbery, with a gold chain possibly being the target. Witnesses described seeing the wounded officer moving through the street before collapsing.
Police said two suspects left the area on an e-bike following the attack. Investigators quickly established a heavy presence around the scene, searching for evidence and working to identify the people involved. Photos of two wanted suspects were also displayed near the crime scene as the investigation continued.
The detective suffered wounds to multiple parts of his body and was transported to Jacobi Hospital. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited him and his family at the hospital Friday afternoon. Mamdani later said the detective was in stable condition and expressed hope for his full recovery.
The attack also changed the city’s planned schedule Friday. A news conference that had been scheduled to discuss New York City’s quarterly crime statistics was canceled as officials went to the hospital to check on the injured detective.
No arrests had been announced in the latest available reports, and investigators were continuing to work to locate the suspects. Police had not publicly confirmed whether a weapon used in the stabbing had been recovered.
The investigation remains active, and additional details about the circumstances of the robbery and the suspects are expected as detectives review evidence and continue their search.
