A 26-year-old man who was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in southwest Atlanta has been identified as Elijah Brookshire, as homicide investigators continue working to determine who was responsible.
Atlanta police were called to the Cushman Circle SW area shortly after 1:40 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Brookshire had suffered a gunshot wound and was placed in a gray 2010 Mazda as someone attempted to take him to Grady Memorial Hospital.
The vehicle did not make it to the hospital. While traveling, the driver stopped near 1192 Michael Langford Drive SW after realizing Brookshire was no longer breathing. Emergency responders were called, and Brookshire was pronounced dead at the location.
Atlanta police homicide investigators are handling the case and are working to establish what led to the shooting and identify those responsible.
An earlier report from Atlanta News First said police responded to the Cushman Circle area after an altercation at an apartment complex. The report also said officers later responded to the Michael Langford Drive location and determined that the two incidents involved the same victim.
Investigators have not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive. It also remains unclear whether police have recovered a weapon or determined exactly how many shots were fired.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting, the circumstances surrounding it, or the vehicle involved to come forward.
People with information can contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477. Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website or the P3 Tips app. Anonymous tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
As detectives continue gathering information, authorities are asking anyone who witnessed something unusual around Cushman Circle or along the route toward Michael Langford Drive around the time of the shooting to contact investigators.
Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the case.
