A Sanger ISD student has died after a school bus overturned Thursday evening in Denton County, leaving a community grieving and an investigation underway.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Huling Road near Lois Road East. The bus was traveling north when it left the roadway, struck a culvert and rolled over, according to preliminary information from investigators.
There were five people aboard the bus: the driver and four students. The driver was identified as 38-year-old Jesse Padgett of Sanger.
Three students and Padgett were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Another student, a 13-year-old, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where the student later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The student who died has not been publicly identified.
Sanger police and fire crews responded to the crash, and the overturned bus remained at the center of the emergency response Thursday afternoon. The incident involved only the school bus, with no other vehicle reported to be part of the crash.
The circumstances that caused the bus to leave the roadway have not yet been determined. Investigators have not released a reason for the crash, and the case remains under review.
Sanger ISD said it was heartbroken by the student’s death and expressed condolences to the student’s family and everyone affected by the accident. The district also said it is working with law enforcement and emergency personnel as investigators continue examining what happened.
The district has not released the name of the student or additional personal details.
Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation. More information is expected as authorities continue working to establish the sequence of events that led to the rollover.
