A 16-year-old was fatally shot in Norristown Tuesday morning after investigators determined that he and another juvenile were playing with a firearm inside a home, authorities said.
Norristown police responded to the 800 block of Arch Street at about 10:30 a.m. on September 22 following reports of a shooting. Officers found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with Norristown police and the Montgomery County Detectives determined that two juveniles had been handling a firearm when one of them fatally shot the other. Authorities have not publicly identified either juvenile.
Another teenager was questioned in connection with the shooting, according to the latest information released Tuesday. Officials had not announced any charges as the investigation continued.
The circumstances surrounding how the firearm came into the home and what happened immediately before the shooting have not been fully disclosed.
The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, although authorities have not announced that anyone has been charged in connection with the death.
The loss has also affected people who knew the teenager personally. Norristown Councilman William McCoy said on social media that the victim had been one of his students. McCoy said he had worked with the teenager as a PBIS coach at Norristown Area High School and remembered speaking with him, encouraging him and believing in his future.
The shooting has left the Norristown community grieving, particularly as residents wait for investigators to establish the full circumstances of what happened inside the home.
Authorities have not released additional details about the firearm or said whether any further charges are expected. The investigation remains active.
