Two young kittens are safe after being abandoned behind a McKeesport Housing Authority property, but authorities are still trying to identify the man captured on surveillance video leaving them there.
The incident happened Friday afternoon behind Steelview Manor on Pirl Street in McKeesport. The housing authority said an eyewitness reported seeing a man arrive in a vehicle, remove two kittens from the trunk and leave them on a hillside behind the building.
Staff members went to the area after the report and found the kittens in a wooded section behind the property. Both are female and are believed to be about 8 weeks old.
The kittens are now being cared for in foster care. Community members and local animal shelters have also offered assistance as the young cats recover from the abandonment.
Housing authority officials later reviewed surveillance footage from the property. The video reportedly shows the vehicle first stopping along the side of the building before driving around to the rear. The driver then opened the trunk, removed the kittens and left them behind before driving away.
The McKeesport Housing Authority has since shared surveillance footage while seeking help identifying the person shown in the video. Police are investigating, and officials have received several tips, but a suspect had not been identified as of the latest update.
The authority is asking anyone who recognizes the man in the footage or has information that could help investigators to call 412-673-6942.
Steelview Manor is one of the McKeesport Housing Authority’s residential communities and is located at 501 Pirl Street. The property is a high-rise apartment building serving residents age 45 and older.
The kittens’ immediate situation has improved since they were found, but the investigation remains active as officials work to determine who left them behind and why.
Anyone with information that could help identify the person involved is encouraged to contact the McKeesport Housing Authority.
