A domestic-related confrontation in Pontiac turned deadly Saturday evening after deputies were called to a home on Monroe Street where gunfire was reported.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. Sept. 19 to the 50 block of Monroe Street following a report of a domestic disturbance. Gunshots could be heard in the background of a call to the sheriff’s operations center, authorities said.
When deputies arrived, they found a 39-year-old Mount Clemens Township man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also found a 31-year-old St. Clair Shores man who had been shot in the leg. Deputies took him into custody without incident and transported him to a local hospital, where he remained under guard while receiving medical treatment.
Investigation centers on domestic confrontation
The preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting followed a confrontation involving the man who died, his estranged wife and the 31-year-old man now in custody.
Several children were present during parts of the incident, but authorities said none of the children were physically injured.
Investigators and personnel from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Laboratory processed the scene as detectives worked to establish what happened before the gunfire and how the two men were wounded. The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the deceased man’s body and is expected to conduct an autopsy.
Suspect remains hospitalized
The 31-year-old man is expected to be taken to the Oakland County Jail once doctors determine that he is medically cleared. His case will then be subject to the continuing investigation and review by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
As of the latest reports, authorities had not announced criminal charges. Investigators were still working to determine the full sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected as detectives and prosecutors review the evidence.
