An officer-involved shooting in Rome on Friday prompted a temporary road closure and a precautionary lockdown at a nearby elementary school as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation began looking into what happened.
The shooting was reported near the intersection of Etowah Terrace, Myrtle Street and South Broad Street. Rome police said shots were fired during a traffic stop in the area, although investigators have not released details about what led to the gunfire or identified the people involved.
One person was taken to a hospital following the incident, according to local reporting. Rome police said no officers were injured. Authorities have not publicly provided an update on the condition of the person who was transported.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked by the Rome Police Department to handle the investigation. The GBI has not yet released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Its investigation remains active.
South Broad Street was temporarily closed as law enforcement worked at the scene near Etowah Terrace and Myrtle Street. The roadway reopened at about 2:30 p.m., while officers remained in the area.
The nearby Anna K. Davie Elementary School was also placed under a precautionary lockdown because of the police activity in the area. Rome City Schools said students and employees were safe, and the lockdown was later lifted. The school returned to normal operations.
Authorities have not released the identities of the people involved or provided a detailed account of what happened during the traffic stop.
