A welfare check at a rural Wisconsin home turned into a death investigation Saturday after deputies found a 56-year-old man dead inside the residence and a 25-year-old man at the property.
The incident happened in Casey Township in Washburn County, where deputies were called to a home on County Highway E near McKenzie Lake at about 1:18 p.m. on September 26, according to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived, they encountered the younger man as he was leaving the property through an attached garage. Investigators said he was detained after making statements when deputies asked about the 56-year-old man they had been asked to check on.
Deputies then conducted a security sweep of the residence.
Inside, they found the 56-year-old man deceased with multiple physical wounds.
Investigation Begins at Casey Township Home
The discovery prompted investigators from the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office to secure the property and begin processing the scene.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab was also asked to assist with the investigation.
Authorities have not publicly identified either man. The sheriff’s office said the names are being withheld while the investigation continues and relatives are notified.
The 25-year-old remains in the Washburn County Jail while authorities prepare for formal charges.
An autopsy of the 56-year-old man has been scheduled. Authorities have not yet publicly released additional details about the nature of his injuries or explained what led to his death.
What Authorities Have Confirmed
The available information establishes a clear sequence of events: deputies were sent to the Casey Township property for a welfare check, encountered a 25-year-old man near the attached garage, and then discovered the 56-year-old man dead inside the residence.
However, several important details remain unknown.
Authorities have not released the identities of the men, disclosed a possible motive, or announced formal criminal charges against the person in custody. The investigation is still active, and additional findings could change the picture as investigators process the scene and the autopsy is completed.
The involvement of the Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab means investigators are continuing to examine the residence for evidence that could help establish what happened before deputies arrived.
Rural Wisconsin Community Awaits More Answers
Casey Township is in northwestern Wisconsin’s Washburn County, where the Sheriff’s Office is continuing to handle the investigation.
For now, authorities have released only the initial details surrounding the welfare check and the discovery. The 25-year-old’s detention does not by itself establish guilt, and formal charges remain pending.
The next significant developments are expected to come from the autopsy and the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Authorities have not indicated when additional information will be released.
